Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.31%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Healthcare , Energy and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.31%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ), which rose 21.96% or 1.93 points to trade at 10.72 at the close. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX: ACB ) added 10.28% or 0.52 points to end at 5.58 and BRP Inc (TSX: DOO ) was up 9.34% or 8.27 points to 96.84 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Converge Technology Solutions Corp (TSX: CTS ), which lost 5.84% or 0.59 points to trade at 9.52 in late trade. Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX: EFR ) declined 5.73% or 0.73 points to end at 12.02 and TFI International Inc (TSX: TFII ) shed 4.93% or 6.82 points to 131.43.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 637 to 424 and 85 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.77% to 13.28 a new 3-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.42% or 8.15 to $1,954.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.44% or 0.49 to hit $112.83 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.38% or 0.45 to trade at $119.48 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.41% to 0.80, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.55% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 98.86.
