Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.13%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Industrials , IT and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.13% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Stantec Inc (TSX: STN ), which rose 9.39% or 5.82 points to trade at 67.77 at the close. Converge Technology Solutions Corp (TSX: CTS ) added 6.71% or 0.740 points to end at 11.770 and Stella-Jones Inc. (TSX: SJ ) was up 5.67% or 2.42 points to 45.07 in late trade.

Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ), which lost 4.66% or 1.43 points to trade at 29.28 in late trade. NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE ) declined 3.97% or 0.310 points to end at 7.490 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX: BIR ) shed 3.57% or 0.235 points to 6.355.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 533 to 479 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.02% or 0.40 to $1784.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.99% or 0.83 to hit $82.59 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.28% or 1.10 to trade at $84.72 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.40% to 0.8083, while CAD/EUR fell 0.15% to 0.6953.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.23% at 93.748.
